Summary

For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed。 For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear。 For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible。 Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison。 Kelsier "snapped" and found in himself the powers of a Mistborn。 A brilliant thief and natural leader, he turned his talents to the ultimate caper, with the Lord Ruler himself as the mark。

Kelsier recruited the underworld's elite, the smartest and most trustworthy allomancers, each of whom shares one of his many powers, and all of whom relish a high-stakes challenge。 Only then does he reveal his ultimate dream, not just the greatest heist in history, but the downfall of the divine despot。

But even with the best criminal crew ever assembled, Kel's plan looks more like the ultimate long shot, until luck brings a ragged girl named Vin into his life。 Like him, she's a half-Skaa orphan, but she's lived a much harsher life。 Vin has learned to expect betrayal from everyone she meets, and gotten it。 She will have to learn to trust, if Kel is to help her master powers of which she never dreamed。

This saga dares to ask a simple question: What if the hero of prophecy fails?

I was riveted by this book! Late nights and reading whenever I could。 I love how the characters develop and how the story plays out! You won’t be disappointed!

Awesome start of the saga。 Its pretty much clear that the final is rushed and even with that the story felt good and intriging。 The world "feels" interesting and immersive, not as much as the stormlight saga but it does an awesome job。 Awesome start of the saga。 Its pretty much clear that the final is rushed and even with that the story felt good and intriging。 The world "feels" interesting and immersive, not as much as the stormlight saga but it does an awesome job。 。。。more

It was well-written, but just too long for my tastes。 The prologue alone took me a night to read。 It’s not fancy language–the prose is quite reachable and understandable。 But I could tell there were going to be a lot of characters and settings。There are few physical descriptions so you’re free to imagine the characters as you want。 But that can be a problem。 For example, there’s a slave race called the Skaa, but you don’t know if they’re physically similar to the dominant race or if they’re some It was well-written, but just too long for my tastes。 The prologue alone took me a night to read。 It’s not fancy language–the prose is quite reachable and understandable。 But I could tell there were going to be a lot of characters and settings。There are few physical descriptions so you’re free to imagine the characters as you want。 But that can be a problem。 For example, there’s a slave race called the Skaa, but you don’t know if they’re physically similar to the dominant race or if they’re some other species。 I was thinking they looked like the aliens in Oddworld at first。It’s too bad you can’t read a fantasy story without needing to invest 18 hours (plus whatever other books there might be in the series)。 I stopped reading at 14% and it was mostly because of the characters。 None of them had any distinguishing characteristics and I couldn’t tell them apart。 Maybe I’ve been ruined by other, more memorable fantasy heists like Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows and Scott Lynch’s The Lies of Locke Lamora。 Now those had some memorable, charismatic people that were worth investing time in。 In Mistborn, I really only wanted to spend time with Karsier, and he wasn’t much。 I felt I could get just as good a sense of the story by reading the Wikipedia summary on it。 。。。more

Not a big fan of fantasy reads。 Take that for why it is。 Some of the back story and character skills were hard to keep up with but about halfway through I got more intrigued

While it might not be the most creative fantasy novel out there Sanderson still makes a pretty captivating story。 The pacing is pretty fast in the very beginning so I can see how easy it would be for someone to get into the story, but it's the world building and exploration of the magic system that really grabbed me。 There is a scientific level of detail to how magic works in Mistborn that I find incredibly compelling where every reveal and discovery has me craving more information。 the expositi While it might not be the most creative fantasy novel out there Sanderson still makes a pretty captivating story。 The pacing is pretty fast in the very beginning so I can see how easy it would be for someone to get into the story, but it's the world building and exploration of the magic system that really grabbed me。 There is a scientific level of detail to how magic works in Mistborn that I find incredibly compelling where every reveal and discovery has me craving more information。 the exposition and lore-dumps that I expect in some fantasy was done in such a clever way that I didn't even realize it was happening。 If I want to give a recommendation to a friend to get into fantasy this will probably be near the top of the list。 。。。more

I haven’t read a lot of Brandon Anderson, but have enjoyed what I’ve read - especially the Reckoners Series (Steelheart)。 And “The Final Empire” did not disappoint。 This epic (read: long) tale delivered in its world-building, creative use of magic and wonderful character development。 And it also had a definitive ending。 I look forward to where the author goes from here in the series。

A handful of weeks ago, I began to watch a 2020, pre-pandemic recording of Sanderson's fantasy writing lectures on YouTube。 His talk on magic systems had particularly interested me。 The magic system in "Mistborn," he described, ran parallel to a magic system I was devising on my own, and with Mistborn already acquired in my latest bookstore haul, I set out to see how he implemented his ideas in practice。What I found was a story that was far too focused on its own magic system, at the expense of A handful of weeks ago, I began to watch a 2020, pre-pandemic recording of Sanderson's fantasy writing lectures on YouTube。 His talk on magic systems had particularly interested me。 The magic system in "Mistborn," he described, ran parallel to a magic system I was devising on my own, and with Mistborn already acquired in my latest bookstore haul, I set out to see how he implemented his ideas in practice。What I found was a story that was far too focused on its own magic system, at the expense of nearly all else。 It was as if Sanderson had spent all his energy devising Allomantic and Feruchemical rules that he had none left for pacing, prose, and even grammar and formatting (there are many proper nouns uncapitalized, new speaker's dialogue without paragraph breaks, and a few other mistakes that contribute to a feeling of sloppiness that pervades throughout)。I often felt myself wondering why I needed to know this system's rules。 Characters will often dump comprehensive instruction on Allomancy on Vin and the reader, and while it's not an unnatural exposition dump, it often serves little purpose to the ultimate narrative, and pushes much of what I read fiction for to the side。 To me, frequent detours to explain The Rules is about as enjoyable as a lengthy tutorial screen appearing in a video game。 Compounding my frustration with these long, pointless walls of text is that Sanderson proves he can use lore to satisfiyingly explain his world and develop his characters。 A scene in chapter 29 is one of the only instances of exposition, plot, and character development working in tandem that I can recall。In many ways I believe that the biggest fault with this novel is a lack of revision, and it seems Sanderson's self conception contributes to a lack of rewrites in his workflow。 This is an author who is known as a workhorse, who prides himself on dropping sequels a mere year after the last book。 The cost of this permeates the book to its core, to its disjointed and unfocused first half, to its utilitarian, unartful prose。Maybe this speed would work for Sanderson more if this book also wasn't so damn long。 Unfortunately, I also imagine that being an author of epic fantasy is another important facet of his self-image。 This might be somewhat respectable if much of that length didn't serve to sabotage the aspects of the book that are actually working。 Most of the middle could have been outright removed and the story immediately would have been improved。 Barring an outright cut, this intermediate act was the most fertile ground for revision, if you ask me。 So much could have been accomplished to present the world, it's characters, and tell an exciting story in the 300-some odd pages that make up Vin's royal ball infiltration, which, as it stands, is merely a filler that barely contributes to the final act。So as it stands this is a 2-star story I wish had enjoyed more。 This was more frustrating than "Dune" for "wasted potential," but at least "Dune" never felt like it was wasting my time, despite its faults。 It's a huge shame that Sanderson doesn't slow down and/or condense his writing to give his ideas a chance to soar。 There is a great book in here that a few more revisions would have certainly uncovered。 。。。more

A pretty great fantasy world。 Some of the moral references are a bit on the nose, but the use of magic and the political structure is interesting。 The characters are good not great, the ending did pay off well。 One of the better fantasy books。

I liked this so much more than I expected to。 People have been recommending this to me for years and I’m so glad I finally took the plunge。 I love the writing。 It’s simple and clear, not bogged down by trying to stick to traditional fantasy tropes。Even more, I love clearly defined magic systems。 The magic in this universe makes sense。 It has rules and limits and it’s all clearly explained to the reader。 As Vin discovers her powers, she’s given a tutorial, with a teacher and a chance to play with I liked this so much more than I expected to。 People have been recommending this to me for years and I’m so glad I finally took the plunge。 I love the writing。 It’s simple and clear, not bogged down by trying to stick to traditional fantasy tropes。Even more, I love clearly defined magic systems。 The magic in this universe makes sense。 It has rules and limits and it’s all clearly explained to the reader。 As Vin discovers her powers, she’s given a tutorial, with a teacher and a chance to play with her magic。 All that gives the readers a chance to understand, too, without feeling like the book is pausing to bore you with complex magic rules。 The action sequences are written well—a special challenge when also dealing with magic。 I was engrossed the entire time。 Vin is a great character。 She’s relate-ably flawed, but strong and independent。 Just the barest hint of romance, but that wasn’t the point, which is great but uncommon in fantasy with a female lead。Overall, a solid 4。5。 。。。more
